Experience Life Aboard the Historic Tugboat Arthur Foss
Seasonal berths are available April 15 thru October 20, 2007
Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park @ 860 Terry Avenue , Seattle

There is common wisdom that the best way to get to know a vessel is to stay onboard for a night or two. Tugboat overnights give you a chance to learn about the historic tugboat Arthur Foss by doing just that. Upon arrival, you’ll be assigned your quarters and given a guided tour of the entire tugboat, including the wheel house and engine room. Then feel free to explore on your own, read a nautical book from the shelves, or lend a hand in the maintenance tasks of the day. There are authentic crew amenities on board: heads, showers, hot water, heat, linen on your bed, and when you wake up, of course there’s coffee in the galley; it’s a tugboat! Choose between officer and crew accommodation spaces; you could even have the Captain’s quarters. It’s a great way to learn about one of the oldest tugboats on the West Coast.

$70/night Officers' cabins
$40/night Crew accommodations

Northwest Seaport's July Maritime Concert
Features Tom Lewis and Idle Road
Saturday, July 21st, 8 pm
at the Center for Wooden Boats, 1010 Valley Street
General Admission $12, Seniors, youth and members $10.

Tom Lewis
lewis3.jpgTom's repertoire—from traditional shanties to songs fashioned out of his own seafaring background—recruits his audience for a voyage by turns reflective, dramatic and humorous. Now resident in Canada's Rocky Mountains, Tom was born in Northern Ireland and that Celtic heritage is obvious in his clear, strong voice, evoking quiet sorrow for a fisherman lost to the sea just as honestly as it powers out a shanty "to be heard above the gales." With songs that have become folk standards; known and sung wherever great choruses ring.

Idle Road
Idleroad2.jpgIdle Road plays straight-ahead Irish dance music: polkas, jigs, hornpipes, reels, and waltzes. Celtic instrumentals and lively vocal work create musical magic. Hailing from the Emerald City instead of the Emerald Isle, they are Chris Russ on fiddle, Mary Brugh on fiddle and bodhran, Chris Roe on accordion, concertina and harp, and Bob Dixson on guitar.

History Blows Off Steam On Opening Day

whistleSwiftsure Whistle Steam whistles from two of our nation's historical emblems will be heard on the Opening Day of boating season, Saturday, May 5th. Recalling the days of a century past when steam was the main source of power, the whistle from Lightship Swiftsure will once again be heard as it is blown from Steamer Virginia V. The Swiftsure's whistle hasn't been blown since the early 1960s and was rebuilt fifteen years ago. Local residents have again become familiar with the sound of steam as the steamer Virginia V tours Lake Washington and Lake Union and on excursions around Puget Sound. Each year, Steamer Virginia V Foundation borrows a historic "guest whistle" which is installed on the 1922 vintage vessel. This year they asked Northwest Seaport to loan the whistle from the Lightship Swiftsure. The Swiftsure, built in 1904 and retired in 1960, is beginning a restoration project of its own that will result in significant improvements to the only remaining lightship that has an original, intact steam plant.

Lightship historian and Northwest Seaport volunteer Ron Burke asked engineer and machinist Al Von Rueden to rebuild the whistle. I've built a lot of train whistles, but it was fun to rebuild the three chambered lightship whistle, says Von Rueben. Together, the three chambers sound a chord of C major. The whistle rebuild was completed in 1992.

Swiftsure

The Swiftsure and Virginia V are both National Historic Landmarks and City of Seattle Landmarks, that exemplify unique construction and contributions to our region's rich maritime history. They are moored at the Historic Ships Wharf at Lake Union Park in Seattle.

Lightships were once a common sight around the United States as they marked offshore reefs and navigation hazards, lighted important shipping channels, and served as the welcoming and departure points for transoceanic journeys. The Swiftsure•s official designation is Lightship No. 83, and she served at all West Coast lightship stations from San Francisco to the Swiftsure Bank at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. During their careers, lightships saved thousands of lives, and the activation of the No. 83's whistle harkens back to 1916 when her larger steam foghorn saved 155 lives. In 1916, the No. 83 was stationed off northern California, when her foghorn guided passengers from a ship that became lost in the dense fog and grounded nearby. The passengers boarded lifeboats and escaped through the fog to the safety of the No. 83.

Virginia V

Steamer Virginia V is the only surviving vessel of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet, small passenger and cargo ferries that carried people to all points across Puget Sound and Lake Washington. She has a pair of steam whistles of her own that were originally used at the Port Gamble mill. Steamer Virginia V Foundation Trustee Larry Benson says "We are happy to showcase the Swiftsure's whistle so the sounds that were once familiar to our grandparent's generation become familiar again to the generations to come. "

THE WAWONA SUMMIT
December 7-9, 2005 Seattle, Washington
Final Report by Wayne Palsson,
Richard and Anna Linzer, and Shannon Fitzgerald

The future of the endangered historic schooner, Wawona, was the focus of a December 2005 three-day summit of local and national experts in maritime heritage. The Wawona was built in 1897 as a 166’ bald-headed, gaff-rigged schooner to serve in the coastwise lumber trade. In 1914, she began her 29 season career as a codfishing vessel. During WWII, she served the war effort as a military barge carrying lumber to the Boeing Aircraft Plant for airplane materials. After her retirement in 1947, she was considered for several ventures but became a heritage ship in 1964. During the past 42 years, the Wawona has hosted thousands of visitors and school children conveying the rich history of the Northwest and the tradition of the maritime trades.

You can download the final Report here.
