Wawona Colloquium Wednesday, June 24
Graduate Students from East Carolina University's summer field school in nautical archaeology help document the schooner Wawona using both traditional and cutting-edge techniques
With the dismantlement of the historic schooner Wawona, an extraordinary effort took place to document and preserve the details of the vessel's construction, history, and unique and representative features. These efforts were mandated by aspects of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Seattle Landmarks Ordinance as required by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Washington Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, the Seattle Landmark's Board, and the National Park Service.
Northwest Seaport will convene a short colloquium to present and discuss the results of recent documentation efforts, consider the preservation of hundreds of artifacts from the ship's deconstruction, and identify future efforts to exhibit and preserve artifacts and information. The colloquium will feature new information on Wawona's history, laser imaging and measurement of the vessel, detailed documentation of construction and materials, and other new discoveries about the 112 year old vessel.

Historic Wawona makes final voyage in Seattle
The historic schooner Wawona is towed from her Lake Union berth on Wednesday morning, March 4 to a Seattle drydock where she will be carefully dismantled and archived. The 112-year old vessel was built to ship timber from Northwest forests to San Francisco and later served the Alaskan cod fishery and hauled aircraft materials during World War II. Many of her artifacts will be preserved for display at the future site of the Museum of History and Industry at Seattle's Lake Union Park. Read more about the Wawona's historic move
