The History of the Twilight

Twilight was built at Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle in 1933, and was active fishing for the Christiansen family until the 1980's. Her builder was Harold Hansen. Twilight was active fishing for the Christiansen family until the 1980's.

She was donated to Northwest Seaport in 2000 for use as an educational tool for local schoolchildren. A group of volunteers has replaced many fir planks and the entire aft deck, and rebuilt the house. She is being restored as a 1930's era fishing boat with operational rigging and fishing equipment.

Our colorful local fishing heritage, the tools used by the fishermen and the lives they led, deserves a closer look. Twilight will be able to visit communities around Lake Washington and Puget Sound to bring this information closer to the schools. When not touring, Twilight will be moored at South Lake Union Park and will be open for public viewing.

Trollers

Twilight is a troller, a type of commercial fishing boat. Trollers use long trolling poles on each side of the boat to hang fishing lines out into the water. The boat then pulls the lines slowly through the water, an activity called 'trolling'. Trollers fish off the coast from California to Alaska, usually for salmon.

The lines are unwound and hauled in by powered spools called gurdies. Leader lines, with baited hooks attached, are clipped onto the main lines. Lead weights hold the line in place at the desired depth. Sometimes a float is clipped onto the line to help regulate its depth and spacing relative to the other lines. Changing the depth and arrangement of lures and lines will target different species of fish. Trollers catch a relatively low volume of high-quality fish When the lines are reeled in, the leaders are unclipped from the main line and hauled in by hand. The fish are then brought on board with a gaff hook. The fish are cleaned on deck and iced down in the hold. A boat like the Twilight could have been worked by one fisherman alone.
